How to Introduce a New Dog Treat
Know what the treat is made from
Many of the natural treats we sell at Fido’s are simple animal parts sold loose. In those cases, the treat itself may be the ingredient – for example, a pig ear, rabbit ear, chicken foot or beef trachea – rather than a manufactured product with a long ingredient list on a packet.
Other treats, such as sausages, jerky, dental products and prepared or mixed treats, can contain several ingredients or more than one animal protein.
When trying something new, it helps to know which type you are buying:
- Single-ingredient natural treat – identify the animal and animal part.
- Prepared or mixed treat – check the available composition or ingredient information.
- If you need to avoid a particular protein or ingredient – ask before buying rather than assuming from the product name alone.
This is particularly important if your dog is trying a new protein such as rabbit, fish, goat or another ingredient they have not eaten before.
