Choose Dog Treats by Chewing Style

Dogs do not all chew in the same way. Some nibble carefully, some settle down and chew steadily, some attack a chew with real determination, and others try to swallow pieces as quickly as possible.

Thinking about how your dog chews can be more useful than choosing a treat by breed or body size alone.

Which chewing style sounds most like your dog?

🐶 Gentle nibbler

A gentle chewer tends to take small bites, eat slowly or spend time working on softer treats rather than trying to break them apart quickly.

They may enjoy softer snacks, lighter natural treats and easier-to-manage chews rather than the firmest products in the shop.

Age and teeth matter too. Puppies, senior dogs and dogs with fewer or worn teeth may also prefer softer choices.

🦴 Steady chewer

A steady chewer usually holds a treat and works on it gradually rather than trying to swallow large sections.

This often gives you the widest choice of textures. Depending on the individual dog, you may be able to consider lighter treats, medium-firm natural chews or more substantial options.

Use the size, shape and firmness of the actual treat alongside your dog’s experience.

💪 Powerful or determined chewer

This is the customer we often hear about in the shop: “My dog gets through everything in seconds.”

A more substantial or firmer chew may be worth considering for a powerful chewer, but the hardest chew available is not automatically the best choice.

Very enthusiastic dogs can bite down with considerable force, so their teeth, experience, mouth size and the hardness of the item all need considering.

Look for something appropriately sized that encourages controlled chewing rather than simply choosing the hardest product on the shelf.

⚠️ Gulper or fast eater

Some dogs are less interested in chewing and more interested in getting the treat down as quickly as possible.

If your dog regularly tries to swallow large pieces, choosing a harder treat does not automatically solve the problem.

Pay particular attention to:

  • The overall size of the treat
  • Whether the whole item can fit comfortably into the mouth
  • Whether large pieces can be bitten off
  • How quickly the treat becomes small enough to swallow
  • How closely you can supervise your dog

Use Fido’s Chew Scale alongside chewing style

We use the Fido’s Chew Scale to make the firmness of different treats easier to understand:

  • Soft – 1/5
  • Light – 2/5
  • Medium – 3/5
  • Firm – 4/5
  • Hard – 5/5

The Fido’s Chew Scale measures firmness, not how long a treat will last. Every dog chews differently.

A powerful chewer does not automatically need a 5/5 chew, and a gentle chewer does not automatically need a 1/5 treat. The scale is there to help you compare firmness alongside your dog’s size, teeth, age and chewing habits.

Size and chewing style work together

Two dogs of the same size can need completely different choices.

A small but determined chewer may need something more substantial than another small dog that gently nibbles. Equally, a large dog with worn teeth may prefer something much softer than its body size suggests.

Watch what your dog actually does

If you are trying a new type of chew, watch how your dog handles it rather than assuming their usual chewing style will always stay the same.

Notice whether they:

  • Nibble gradually
  • Hold and work on the chew steadily
  • Bite down hard to break pieces off
  • Try to swallow chunks quickly
  • Lose interest because the chew is too difficult

That information can help you make a better choice next time.
