Beef Pizzle for Dogs – What Is It & How to Choose One?

Beef pizzle is a firm, single-ingredient natural dog chew. You may also see the same type of treat referred to as a bully stick or simply a pizzle.

At Fido’s, our Beef Pizzle is made from 100% beef pizzle rather than a manufactured mixture of ingredients.

What exactly is beef pizzle?

Pizzle is the penis of a bull or steer, prepared and dried to make an edible dog chew.

It might sound unusual if you have not bought natural animal-part treats before, but it is simply another part of the animal, in the same way that natural dog treats can include ears, feet, trachea, tails and other parts.

Is beef pizzle a single-ingredient treat?

Fido’s Beef Pizzle is listed as 100% beef pizzle. The pizzle itself is the ingredient.

That makes it different from prepared chews, sausages and mixed treats that can contain several ingredients or more than one animal protein.

If your dog needs to avoid beef, however, beef pizzle is obviously not suitable simply because it is a natural or single-ingredient treat.

What is beef pizzle like to chew?

Beef pizzle is a firmer natural chew rather than a soft snack. Dogs usually need to work at it rather than simply swallowing it like a small training treat.

How long an individual pizzle lasts can vary enormously. A steady chewer may work on one for considerably longer than a very powerful dog.

For that reason, at Fido’s we do not promise that a chew will last for a particular number of minutes or hours.

Is beef pizzle suitable for strong chewers?

It can be one of the firmer choices worth considering for a more enthusiastic chewer, but “strong chewer” does not automatically mean choosing the hardest treat available.

Look at the individual dog’s:

  • Mouth and jaw size
  • Chewing strength
  • Whether they chew steadily or try to gulp
  • Age and condition of their teeth
  • Previous experience with firmer chews

The physical size and thickness of the individual pizzle matters as well as its firmness.

How does it fit with Fido’s Chew Scale?

Our Fido’s Chew Scale is designed to compare the firmness of treats rather than promise how long they will last.

  • Soft – 1/5
  • Light – 2/5
  • Medium – 3/5
  • Firm – 4/5
  • Hard – 5/5

The scale measures firmness, not chewing time. Every dog chews differently.

When buying any pizzle, use its individual size and firmness alongside the way your own dog chews.

What size dog can have beef pizzle?

Do not choose from body size or breed alone.

A smaller determined chewer and a larger gentle chewer may handle exactly the same product very differently. Check whether the individual piece is large enough for your dog to hold and chew without easily taking the whole thing into their mouth.

What if my dog has never had beef pizzle before?

If pizzle or beef is unfamiliar to your dog, introduce a small amount first rather than allowing them to eat a large quantity immediately.

Watch how they handle the texture while chewing and how they respond afterwards.

Does beef pizzle clean dogs’ teeth?

Chewing provides dogs with something to work on, but we do not describe beef pizzle as a treatment for dental disease or promise that it will clean a dog’s teeth.

If you are concerned about plaque, damaged teeth, sore gums or your dog’s dental health, speak to your vet rather than relying on a chew to correct the problem.

Can dogs eat the whole pizzle?

Beef pizzle is an edible chew, but that does not mean every dog should be allowed to swallow every remaining piece.

Supervise your dog and remove the chew once it becomes small enough for them to attempt to swallow whole, or if it becomes damaged or difficult to manage safely.

Important: Always supervise your dog while chewing, provide fresh drinking water and remove a chew when it becomes small, damaged or easy to swallow whole. Treats should be given as part of an appropriate overall diet.
