Rabbit Ears for Dogs – Fur-On or Natural?

Rabbit ears are one of the simpler natural dog treats to understand. At Fido’s, a natural rabbit ear is exactly that – a rabbit ear rather than a manufactured recipe containing lots of different ingredients.

We stock both natural rabbit ears without fur and furry rabbit ears. They come from the same animal protein, but the texture and appearance are different.

What is a rabbit ear dog treat?

A rabbit ear is a single animal-part treat made from the ear of a rabbit. In Fido’s natural range, nothing else is added to it.

Natural pieces are not manufactured to an identical shape, so rabbit ears can vary in:

  • Length
  • Width
  • Thickness
  • Colour
  • Amount of fur

That natural variation is normal and means the piece your dog receives may not look exactly the same as another one.

Furry rabbit ears or fur-off rabbit ears?

Natural rabbit ears without fur

These have the fur removed and give dogs a straightforward rabbit-based natural chew.

They may appeal to owners who want a simple single-animal-part treat without the furry texture.

Furry rabbit ears

Furry rabbit ears have the fur left naturally attached.

The fur changes the feel and appearance of the treat, but it is still a rabbit ear and the protein source remains rabbit.

You may see strong digestive or health claims made online about fur-on treats. At Fido’s, we prefer not to promise that a furry rabbit ear will treat or prevent a digestive problem. Choose it as a natural treat rather than as a substitute for veterinary care.

Are rabbit ears long-lasting?

That depends very much on the dog.

Rabbit ears are not something we would describe as an indestructible or guaranteed long-lasting chew. A gentle chewer may spend considerably longer on one than a powerful dog that crunches through lighter treats quickly.

This is why we avoid promising a set chewing time.

What size dog can have a rabbit ear?

Do not choose by breed alone. Look at the size of the individual ear alongside your dog’s mouth size, age, teeth and chewing behaviour.

A smaller dog may take its time with a rabbit ear, while a larger or determined chewer may finish the same type of treat much more quickly.

Natural rabbit ears also vary in size, so check the actual piece before giving it to your dog.

What if my dog has not eaten rabbit before?

Rabbit is a separate animal protein from chicken, beef, pork and fish. If it is new to your dog, introduce a small amount first rather than giving several unfamiliar rabbit treats at once.

If your dog needs to avoid a particular protein, make sure rabbit itself is appropriate for them rather than assuming it will automatically be suitable.

Dogs on a prescribed veterinary diet or food-elimination trial should only be given treats approved as part of that plan.

Are rabbit ears single ingredient?

At Fido’s, our natural rabbit ears are single animal-part treats. The rabbit ear itself is the ingredient.

This is different from prepared rabbit-flavoured products, sausages or mixed treats, which may contain other ingredients or more than one protein.

If avoiding an ingredient is important for your dog, ask us about the exact product rather than relying only on the word “rabbit” in its name.

Other rabbit treats at Fido’s

Rabbit ears are only one part of our rabbit selection. Depending on current stock, our ranges may also include other rabbit animal-part treats such as rabbit feet and pelts, as well as mixed boxes and hampers containing rabbit items.

How should I give my dog a rabbit ear?

  • Choose a piece appropriate for your dog’s physical size and mouth.
  • Introduce it gradually if rabbit is a new protein.
  • Supervise your dog throughout.
  • Provide fresh drinking water.
  • Watch whether your dog chews steadily or tries to swallow large pieces.
  • Remove the treat if it becomes small, sharp, damaged or easy to swallow whole.
  • Include edible treats within your dog’s overall daily food allowance.
